What Is a Leshen? 'The Witcher' Season 2's Tree Monster Explained!

The official trailer for season two of The Witcher dropped earlier today and it gave fans a first look at all of the monsters Geralt (Henry Cavill) will take on in the new season.

While fans are likely familiar with the gargoyles and vampires that appear in the video, it also featured a less recognizable foe – the Leshen, a monster popularized by CD Projekt Red’s video game trilogy.

According to Screen Rant, the Leshen is a “highly intelligent forest spirit that devours humans whole.”

In the trailer, the monster is seen controlling the roots of the forest, sending them towards Ciri as Geralt tries to cut them away.

The Leshen, or Leshy, appears briefly in Andrzej Sapkowski‘s original Witcher books as a piece of Continent folklore, but is a more formidable presence in the video game series, particularly in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

It preys on wanderers and often takes the form of a harmless animal or a tree to make a surprise attack. Screen Rant notes that the Leshen featured in the teaser is more similar to the monster that appears in the video games.

Season 2 of The Witcher is set to premiere on Netflix on December 17, 2021 and you can watch the trailer here!
